Through the last couple of years, the people that have chosen Emo haircuts have increased substantially as the haircuts and styles that come with the state of mind have increased their merit in the world of fashion and hair styles. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Emo hairstyles – they have been popularized by teenagers throughout the globe and can be described by black, straight hairstyles that often make use of volume on the top and sweeping bangs for both the guys and the girls that chose to wear the hairstyles.
Although this has been a predominantly young hairstyle, there are many ways that you can make the hairstyle your own and create the versatility that comes with creating a hairstyle that can be an effective means of style and fashion for all ages. Simple foregoing the traditional black Emo hair color for a lighter color and choosing to take advantage of traditional hair colors, or your own natural color while making use of the popular layers which are created in the style and the volume that can be created with certain products can bring you up to date with this fashion forward style, rather than leave you looking like you do not belong in your age group.

Hi Rene,
Emo hairstyles can be easy to create with thin hair, as the layers which are used within the hair create the illusion of thin hair throughout the bottom of the style.
As for the volume which is created through the top, you can get this with a comb that is used to tease or back comb the hair and some great finishing spray.
My favorite hairspray to create the volume in my scene inspired hairstyle is Tigi Bedhead! It lasts all day long and into the night with ease.
Seeing your hair stylist and asking about Emo hairstyles is a great way to get this style!

There are many Emo hairstyles that can be found throughout the website, with and without colors. Finding pictures and printing these for inspiration, you can bring these to your stylist with ease.

Emo hairstyles can be created with thick hair simply, as they are often created with layered hair.

For the picture in the middle of the page, the girl with the pink shirt and dove tattoo. What colors were used?
Lori

Blonde and Chocolate Highlights were used in different tones and variations to get this look. It’s a great unique look that takes advantage of “traditional” colors for hair!

Lulu,
Thick hair works for an Emo hairstyle, as the hair is often cut into layers and therefore the layers through the bottom of the hairstyle actually have the ability to create the appearance of thinner hair.
With thick hair you are actually even able to create more volume through the top of the style (:

Hi Ana,
There are many Emo hairstyles or emo-like hairstyles that can be created with many colors of hair. My natural color is dark brown, and I have had an emo-style of haircut with small changes for about the past year, to my shoulders. I think you should try it, the style is more powerful than the color in the style.
Maybe in the future you could experiment with color when you are more secure with the style, but for now – it’s a great way to take advantage of a trendy haircut.
Mandy,
I would find a young hairdresser that is aware of the current styles and that has attended hair shows and is aware of the techniques used to create a trendy emo hairstyle.
Although high-end salons often cost more, I find that the haircuts are often better, more in depth and last longer.
Hope this helps girls!

I want an emo hair cut but I have plan red hair and my mom wont let me dye it, do you think it would look okay on me
Lori

Jacinda,
You should do it! There are many ways that you can add color without dying the hair. You can use colored hair extensions that clip in to the hair and can easily be removed. This is a great way to add color to the hair.
Your mom is right though, dying the hair can damage it – and takes forever to grow out!

I have hair about three inches past my shoulders and I’d really like that hairstyle. My mom said it was okay if I got it so now we’re wondering if it will work. My hair is brown with dirty blonde highlights naturally, will this work???
P.S. when my hair gets cut short, it looks like a pumpkin, could you tell me if this will work??? Thank you so much!!!!
Lori

If you hair looks like a pumpkin when it is short, is this because there is too much volume in the hair that makes it pouf out?
Take into account that Emo hairstyles are often those which use multiple layers in the hair. Maybe upload a picture and get the opinion of others on the site?

Heather,
Emo hairstyles work in thin hair too, even though layers are incorporated into the hair, you can still work with it! Styling the hair with teasing methods often create a thicker looking hairstyle, too.

Hi Ashley,
Chances are that if you want the true Emo look you have to be willing to straighten it when you style it, but the layers within the hair can really help to reduce the thickness within the hair.
Since the thickness in the hair is reduced, it will be easier to straighten and the color sounds right on for an Emo style.

Nandi,
You might want to take into account the texture of your hair. The Emo hairstyles are all created on really short hair, so you might need to have your hair relaxed to accomodate the style. As for preventing damage, use a good deep conditioning treatment to offset the heat styling that you are going to use with an Emo hairstyle.

heyyy im lilly,
i want to get an emo haircut but my hair is curly and really poofyyy… would it work??????
Lori

Lillyy,
You may want to consider the time that you will have to spend straightening the hair to get the style that you want. Do you want to spend that much time on the hair? It will work, but you have to be willing to spend the time to style it.
